Mercy Day & Japanese Incursion

From Year 9

Year 9 students have been very busy finishing off Term 3 with various excursions, internal and external activities, and completing academic assessments.

One of the highlights was last Friday when we had Mercy Day. Students participated in various fun activities to raise awareness of the charity group in their Houses and to display House spirits. For Year 9s, the theme for the activities was ‘Guessing Games’. 9A created ‘Guess the Teacher’s Pets’; 9B organised a blindfolded ‘Guess the Flavour' game; and 9C arranged two jars of jelly beans for students to guess the number of sweets.

On Friday we celebrated Mercy Day, and our class had the pleasure of hosting a stall where we got students to guess the teacher's pets. It was extremely fun watching people trying to collaborate and work together! As well as the stall, the assembly and mass was also enjoyable. Overall, Mercy Day was a really good oppourtunity to spend time with friends and remind us of the need to help those who need it most!

On Friday the 13th St ¹û¶³APP celebrated Mercy Day, an annual celebration marking the opening of The House of Mercy, founded by Catherine McAuley. Throughout the day, there were a number of activities and food stalls from which we could take part and purchase. Every year each class is asked to run an activity or stall, and my class 9C came together and put on a Guess the Jellybeans in the Jar.

Over the past term, year 8 and 9 students were provided with the opportunity to be a part of the leadership team. This leadership course has been amazing for us, as we have learned new skills and are able to apply our skills. For year 9 applicants, we have all found this process really good because it is a lot like applying for jobs, and we all need practice with interviews and applications. Overall, this process has been really beneficial and a learning experience. Even if I did not have the honour of receiving a role, it has taught me a lot and given me amazing new skills.

Students have thoroughly enjoyed the activities, and they are to be commended for their creativity and great effort. A number of Year 9 Japanese students also attended the Furoshiki Workshop this afternoon in which they learned about the art of wrapping using cloth.

Year 9 Japanese

In Year 9 Japanese, students have been exploring the topic of fast food in Japan, focusing on reading menus in katakana and learning how to talk about their favourite fast food. They have also been working on writing speeches about their own eating habits, incorporating newly learned expressions and grammar structures.

Recently, the students engaged in a hands-on activity where they created miniature food models using polymer clay, allowing them to connect creatively with the topic. The class will be finishing up the term with a furoshiki workshop, which will be facilitated by an educator from Kimono House.
