Determination and Commitment

From Year 8

This fortnight, the Year 8 students are diligently preparing for their final assessment tasks and upcoming examinations. By maintaining good study habits and developing effective organisational skills, the Year 8 students are laying a strong foundation for academic success. It is fantastic to see the students supporting one another in their pursuit of personal success and consistently demonstrating a positive mindset.

In English, students are exploring the theme of loyalty in the film The Outsiders, while in Humanities, they’re learning about the fascinating lives of key figures from the Mongol Empire. The students continue to build on their language skills in French, Japanese, and Italian. Year 8 Music has the students mastering guitar chords, while in Drama classes, the focus is on refining their performance skills.

Outside of the classroom, the ACS Summer Sports Programme is in full swing, offering brilliant opportunities for the students to develop perseverance, teamwork, and a passion for active participation. We encourage all students to take full advantage of these enriching opportunities.

The Year 8 students are commended for their determination and commitment to this important journey of learning!

So far in Term 4, we have been able to learn a lot in such a short time. We learnt how to perform on stage in Drama with people we don’t normally work with, learned about the human body in Science and the different body systems and functions, and we also had the opportunity to dissect a heart. We were taught how to use Excel on our laptops to complete a booklet in Maths about probability. We were also given the opportunity to learn about different religions and how they celebrate sacraments in Religion. We discovered lots of information about the Mongol Empire, Genghis Khan, and a historical figure of our choice. Reading The Outsiders helped us understand how the characters feel and how life was in America back in the ’60s. We have made tote bags in Design Technology, pizzas in Food Technology, and learnt about robots in STEAM. ACS has been so much fun—playing sports we enjoy against other schools, meeting new people, and exploring new places.

In Year 8 Science in Term Four, we were very lucky to perform a heart dissection! We used a sheep’s heart, as it is similar to a human heart. We learnt about all parts of the human body, especially the heart. This was a valuable experience. In English, we are working on analysing the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. This novel tackles the harsh theme of violence and has a teenager called Ponyboy as the protagonist. It also covers the themes of Identity, Coming of Age, Loyalty, and Friendship. Within this unit, we are also learning how to expand our essays and improve our analytical skills. I look forward to seeing what the rest of this term brings!

Term 4 has started off strong, with winning several ACS games, making pizzas in Food Tech, and competing against other schools in Debating. Although there are upcoming exams and several summative tests, the term has been filled with excitement and unforgettable memories made with friends and classmates. My highlight so far is definitely ACS, as we have won all of the games played this term so far. We also had the opportunity to dissect a heart in Science, where we learnt about its different parts. Debating has been exciting too, as we met new people from different schools and competed on several topics. In Food Tech, we also made pizzas—I created a heart-shaped pizza, and Harriet made a star-shaped one. Despite the stress of preparing for exams, the teachers are always willing to support and help us. Overall, Term 4 will be unforgettable, filled with memorable activities.

So far in Term 4, being in Year 8 has been great. We started ACS at the beginning of the term, focusing on training and then moving on to matches. I really enjoy ACS because I play basketball and have awesome teammates and coaches. Even though we haven't won any matches yet, the scores have been really close, and I think it’s all about having fun. Another highlight this term is Food Technology. We’ve made all sorts of dishes, experimenting and learning new things. I loved making burgers and teriyaki meatballs the most because they tasted amazing, and it was fun to cook them with my friends. Food Technology has taught me a lot about safety and teamwork, and overall, it’s a great subject. I’m really excited to continue it next year.
